Healthcare is a booming industry and has been for a few years now. While other industries have suffered high unemployment rates the healthcare industry has remained relatively stable and in some cases experiencing job growth. This is due in part to the large amount of the population known at the baby boomers, which are those who were born between 1946 and 1964. This generation gained the most in population, with most of them being born about nine months after the end of World War II.
This particularly large generation is aging to the point of needing healthcare on a continual basis, thus the need for more healthcare professionals than ever before. Professions in healthcare can vary greatly, from a maintenance worker who specializes in hospital equipment to a healthcare administrator to a surgeon. Training for these various careers can range from on-the-job training to years in college or university. If you find yourself drawn to a career in healthcare it may help to write down your other interests and see if there is a correlation; one who studies music and also wishes to work with people could become a music therapist.
An individual who enjoys administrative work might enjoy working as a medical transcriptionist. Many traditional schools and online courses are available for one that wants to work towards this career. A medical transcriptionist may work in a hospital setting, a doctors’ office or in some cases may be able to work from home as an independent contractor. It is not a career which requires a degree, and the training time is relatively short at approximately two years. The only downside of this particular choice is the job outlook; this is one of the few careers in healthcare that is not growing as much as the rest of the industry with the growth rate at a mere eight percent.
Another healthcare profession which enjoys a high rate of salary is an Anesthesiologist. This is a specialty profession that an individual will train for after they have completed their residency. An Anesthesiologist (or anesthetists in the UK) works with a team of individuals to create a plan of anesthesia for each patient. They will also deal with airway management, pain control, and life support during an operation. The job outlook is good, with Anesthesiologists being in high demand; job growth is expected to reach 18%. The median income for an Anesthesiologist is approximately $290,000 dollars, among one of the highest paid professions available.
There are some characteristics that one who is interested in a career in healthcare must have in order to be successful. Empathy is one; being able to put yourself in someone’s place and understand what they are going through is a key component of the job. Dependability is another; there are teams of healthcare professionals who depend on each other to provide the very best care they can to each and every patient. If you cannot be a dependable member of the team you will find that your career will not be successful.
